Native Language Instructor Position - Elementary Level
2025/26 School Calendar Year - F/T position and reports directly to the School Principal.
Position Summary:
The Ojibwe Language Instructor will be responsible for effective instruction and students' progress throughout the school year. In strengthening our language Customary Traditions, Story, Song and Land Based Learning are the ties that bind our language. Therefore, are the basic principles to effectively learning and understanding our language and connection to the natural environment.
Essential Functions:
- Develop lesson plans, assessments, evaluations and provide language instruction for all grades assigned.
- Create and provide short/long range instructional workplan(s) and submit them to the principal.
- Inspire and mentor students to develop pride in their ancestral language and motivate them to use our Anishinaabemowin language in all aspects of their daily lives.
- Create innovative awareness activities to the school populous to promote the use of Anishinaabemowin language.
- Provide effective classroom management
- Develop and maintain progress reports and term report cards
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all information related to students, parents and staff
- Attend workshops, training sessions and conferences as it pertains to the program
- Interact with staff and community in a positive and courteous manner
- Assist in other areas as needed on occasion as designated by the principal
Preferred:
- Ontario College of Teacher's Certificate, Bachelor of Arts, Native Language Certification and an understanding of theories and methodologies for teaching Native Language and the ability to apply to practice.
Minimum:
- Fluent in Ojibwe Language. Anishnaabemowin Immersion Program Certificate, Native Classroom Certificate.
Other:
Knowledge and/or experience with the culture, history and customs associated with our language. Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to work collaboratively within a team environment. Knowledgeable with software applications, such as Word, Excel, and Power Point, First Aid Certification and CPR would be an asset.
